June 2, 2009

On Tuesday June 2, 2009, Abyssinian Development Corporation (ADC), kicked off its 20 th anniversary celebration and hosted the Abyssinian Harlem Renaissance Ball that took place at The ADC Renaissance Tent located on 135 th Street between Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard and Lenox Avenue. The evening was a grand celebration of 20 years of the mission and work of ADC, with appearances by Mayor Bloomberg, Comptroller Thompson, Cicely Tyson, and performances by Grammy-Award winning artist Chrisette Michele, and world renowned composer and producer Ray Chew & the legendary roots Crew.

ADC honored four individuals who have exemplified dedicated service to our community and supported ADC from the very beginning. The recipients of this year’s Harlem Renaissance Awardwere: Richard Beattie, Chairman of the Board and Founder of New Visions for Public Schools, for his partnership in the establishment of the Thurgood Marshall Academies; Lionel McIntyre, Associate Professor of Urban Planning & Director of the Urban Technical Assistance Project at Columbia University, for his consultancy in the development of the Abyssinian Neighborhood Plan; Kathryn Wylde, President of the Partnership for New York City, for her integral role in the establishment of ADC as a CDC; and Mortimer Zuckerman, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Boston Properties, for his vision and early investment in ADC’s first affordable housing project.

ADC is grateful to all of our supporters, volunteers, staff, and consultants who generously give to this community through their treasure, time, and talent, and inspire us all to continue to do so. Funds raised through the Harlem Renaissance Ball will provide support for the programs and services of Abyssinian Development Corporation.
