Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change (TMA) will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on Wednesday evening. January 30, 2019, 6 PM, at the Marian Anderson Theater (Aaron Davis Hall -City College of New York campus). TMA was one of the first 12 New Visions Schools to be part of the "small school movement" in NYC and the only one of the first 12 still in existence.
When TMALS was founded in 2005, the "TMA Educational Pipeline" was simultaneously created. This "Education Pipeline" offers families and their children the opportunity to remain in one learning environment over 13 years (K-12), without experiencing transition adjustment issues between middle and high school levels. It also increased the likelihood of on-time graduation.
TMA and TMALS both offer rigorous academic environments and have been recognized by the New York City Department of Education as "culturally relevant and responsive showcase schools." TMA's middle school was identified as a showcase school for the Middle School Quality Initiative and TMALS was distinguished for its TMALS implementation of the Yale Ruler Method to strengthen socio-emotional development of students. As a result, schools from all over the world have come to observe this method at the Lower School.
